History of AVG

Recently, the anti-virus company Grisoft, creator of AVG Anti-Virus, acquired anti-spyware firm Ewido Networks, re-labeling their Ewido anti-spyware program as AVG Anti-Spyware Professional Edition. AVG also used this product to add an integrated anti-spyware solution to some versions of the AVG Anti-Virus family of products, plus made a freeware AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition available for private and non-commercial use. This shows a trend by anti virus companies to launch a dedicated solution to spyware and malware. Zone Labs, creator of Zone Alarm firewall have also released an anti-spyware program.

The main reason to use AVG is the drive-by-download protection it has. No other security comes close to protecting the system from these types of attacks.

According to Google, 1 in 1000 Web pages is delivering some kind of malicious code, mainly in the form of exploits delivered by drive-by downloads. That translates to something like 70,000 poisoned pages ready and waiting to infect visitors on any given day.

Google also found that antivirus programs could not detect all of these threats. The best of them detected only 70% of the drive-by downloads. And in the case of the exploit shown in our latest video, users are actually blocked from contacting or downloading updates from antivirus companies

AVG Free edition is a good way to provide free security.  The main down fall to this, no rootkit detection and or pervention. Most new aged infections include a rootkit, which means your not going to be protected completely with the free edition.

I recommend the paid edition, the basic edition works good, but doesn't come with a firewall.  That to is ok, because I recommend using the windows firewall anyways.
